Since 1948, B. G. Somadder was the sole clearing agent of undivided Assam. At that time, Late B. G. Somadder, Customs authorised Clearing Agent cleared huge quantity of imported consignment of wheat and despatched the same to innumerable different places at Assam. During a severe earthquake during that period of time, huge quantity of galvanized aluminium sheets and also other materials were despatched from Calcutta to different destinations at Assam. This service was rendered free by B. G.Somadder.

In 1947-48, B. G. Somadder converted his proprietorship concern to that of a partnership firm in the name and style of B. G. Somadder & Sons. Thereafter, till 1952, clearance and handling of imported consignments of undivided Assam was carried on by the partnership firm.


Materials imported from Canada for a Hydel Project at Barapani (Meghalaya) was handled by the firm B. G. Somadder & Sons. For that Hydel Project at Barapani, all their materials was cleared and despatched to Assam by B. G. Somadder & Sons. Thereafter, the firm handled clearance work for Assam Cement Company (a Govt. Enterprise) and also for Mamlu Charria Limited at Cherrapunji for which materials came from Yugoslovia worth crores of Rupees. Besides these, clearance for other materials imported by the local Importers was handled by B. G. Somadder & Sons for crores of Rupees. For Assam State Electricity Board's Umiam Hydel Electricity Project, the firm cleared and stored and despatched the materials for months together in riverine route.

B. G. Somadder & Sons was also the sole Customs authorised clearing agent for Yokohoma Spice Bank, since 1947 known as Bank of Tokyo.

B. G. Somadder & Sons was the Customs authorised clearing agent since inception of Scindia Steam Navigation Company.

During the late of 60's and early 70's, the Govt. of Australia gifted to the Governments of Assam and Meghalaya (which was then a new state of India, carved out of undivided Assam) as well as to the Department of Animal Husbandry, Govt. of India, consignments of live-stock comprising of Australian jersey cows, which came by air in two batches to Calcutta, from Melbourne, enroute to Assam and Meghalaya. These two live-stock consignments of Australian cows were cleared and despatched to their final destination by B. G. Somadder & Sons, without any hitch.

In the year 1973, huge quantity of machineries for Assam Gas Company worth several crores of Rupees was handled by B. G. Somadder at Calcutta Port.

In 1978/79, shipwise cement was cleared by B. G. Somadder & Sons at Haldia Port and Diamond Harbour (mid-stream) and despatched to Central Inland Water Transportation Corporation, a Govt. of India Organisation.

Since inception our organisation has been awarded substantial contracts by various Govt. and non-Govt. parties, for clearance of imported consignments and also for warehousing and onward transportation of the same, upto the site of the Importer. Among our clients, there are Government Enterprises/Undertakings and also a few leading Private Sectors. We have executed almost all the Project Contracts of West Bengal State Electricity Board, Assam State Electricity Board, Damodar Valley Corporation, West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd., to their entire satisfaction. Some of the details are given below :

We have been appointed by West Bengal State Electricity Board as their Clearing Agent in the year 1985 and since then we are doing their entire clearance jobs. We have executed their project work at Teesta Canal Falls Hydro-Electric Project at Siliguri. For Bakreswar Thermal Power Project of West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd., we have done the Customs clearance and transportation of their consignments upto their final destination.

For Project consignments imported by KEC International for Bakreswar Thermal Power Project, we were again entrusted the job and we effected Customs clearance and transportation upto their satisfaction.

We are executing work on behalf of Damodar Valley Corporation as their Customs authorised Shipping & Clearing Agent for about three decades. During this period we have executed Project clearance and transportation jobs for their project consignments like Maithon, Panchet and Mezia Thermal Power Project.

For Assam State Electricity Board, we are their Customs authorised Shipping & Clearing Agent since the inception of the Board. We have executed all their project import works at Namrup, Assam.

Apart from the above mentioned Thermal Power Project works, we have been awarded substantial contracts outside West Bengal also. We have done customs clearance for Feroz Gandhi Unchahar Thermal Power Project of Uttar Pradesh Rajya Bidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd., Rai Bareli, U. P. and transportation of the entire imported materials from Calcutta Port to Rai Bareli, U.P. to their satisfaction.

For clearance of Power Projects we have personnel having necessary expertise and experience for arranging transportation, warehousing, loading and unloading of the project materials upto the site of the Importer.

Besides the Project consignments of West Bengal State Electricity Board, West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd., Assam State Electricity Board, Damodar Valley Corporation, we are also doing jobs of clearing, forwarding and transportation of many other Government Enterprises/Undertakings such as, The Indian Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., Assam Petrochemicals Ltd., Assam Gas Ltd., Biecco Lawrie Ltd. and many others. We are also rendering our services as Bedding, Packing and Lashing contractor for Coal India Ltd., Northern Coalfields Ltd. and Bokaro Steel Plant. In the private sector, amongst many others, we are the authorised clearing, forwarding and transport Agent of M/s. ITC Ltd., Paperboards & Specialty Papers Divn. We do clearance of about 200 containers of Paper Pulp consignments per month from Kolkata/Haldia Port.

We were the authorised Custom House Agent of Oil & Natural Gas Commission, Govt. of India Undertaking during the period from 1978 to 1983 and have cleared about 10,000 M.T. of Drilling Rigs, Vibrators and many other equipment upto their satisfaction.

We are having our Branch Offices at Mumbai, Chennai, Haldia and at Calcutta Airport, with an organised infrastructure at all our offices and have a staff strength of around 50 employees at our Calcutta Office, to facilitate clearance of imported consignments, arriving both by Ship and Air and also for handling export, on behalf of our clients. We are the only clearing agent at Calcutta having their own dedicated Bedding & Packing and Lashing workers.
